Saint Nicholas Byzantine Rite Catholic Church Is Located On The Corners Of Washington & Johnstone Streets In Perth Amboy. St. Nicholas Also Has A Sister Parish, St. Nicholas Of Edison, Located On May Street In Nearby Edison Township. Both Parishes Are Served By The Very Reverend Robert Radvansky.


BACKGROUND & HISTORY OF ST. NICHOLAS

In Order To Understand The Begining Of St. Nicholas, We Must First Understand The Community Where Saint Nicholas Is Located - Perth Amboy. In The First Half Of 19OO" s, Emmigrants From Europe Were Leaving Their Homelands In Search For A Better Life The United States Of America. The City Of Perth Amboy Had Been Known For A "Boom Town", Due To The Fact That The Industries Alongside The Arthur Kill, Raritan Bay, And Raritan River Had Provided Several Jobs For Many, And The Developing City Of Perth Amboy, As Well As Neighboring Towns Like Woodbridge, And Edison Were Good Places For A Family To Live. Among Those Emmigrants Were People From Czechloslovakia (at that time czechloslovakia was reffered to as austria - hungary.) The Slovaks Also Brought Their Ways Of Life And Customs Which Consisted Of Food, Clothing, Hard Work, And Religion. It Is Believed That There Had Been 2 Religous Groups Among The Czechloslovakians, Byzantine Catholic & Greek Orthodox. After Settling Down In The Area, Many Slovaks Joined The Saint John"s Greek Orthodox Church. The Story Goes That A Group Of These Czechloslovakians Decided That Since They Were Now In America, They Should Follow The American Ways, And Go Under The Pope. It Has Been Said That THese Slovaks Left St. Johns, And Established St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church.

St. Nicholas Was Origionally Located On John Street In Perth Amboy. The Existing Parrish Had Been Built By Father Gragashi In The 194O" s.

Saint Nicholas Byzantine Rite Catholic Church Belongs To The Diocese Of Passaic Eparhgy In West Paterson, New Jersey. The Diocese OF Passaic Is Led By Bishop Michael Pataki. The Diocese Of Passaic Covers The East Coast Of The United States. New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvannia, Conneticut, Massachusets, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, And Florida.
